Couple Saves Kitten From the Highway—Then Her Luck Drastically Changes

After noticing something on the road while driving home, a man from Ontario, Canada, stopped his car on the side of the highway and found a tiny kitten begging for help.

In a post shared on Reddit on Thursday under the username u/bigbadclifford, the poster, Cliff, shares pictures of the disheveled kitten, still looking confused after being found actively trying to stop cars on the highway to get some help.

Cliff told Newsweek that in the early morning of September 1, 2025, he was driving home along Highway 2 between Kingston and Gananoque, Ontario, when something caught his eye.

It was a small kitten, sitting on the shoulder of the road with her paw lifted in the air as if to flag him down.

“I kept driving for about 20 seconds before realizing she wasn’t going to survive out there on her own. I turned around, pulled over, and the kitten darted under my car. A man in a pickup truck stopped to block traffic so neither of us would get hit. Within moments, the kitten was in my hands. She was tiny, weak, and fit entirely in one palm,” he said.

“I called my wife on the way home and said, ‘Get some warm water ready. I’ve just rescued a kitten. I don’t know if she’ll make it, but we’ll give it a shot.”

Thanks to the poster and his wife’s prompt help, the kitten did indeed make it, and they named her Liah, short for “Life Is A Highway,” in honor of where she was found.

“The vet estimated she was about four weeks old, likely separated from her mother in a rural area, possibly after wandering from a barn,” Cliff said.

Now, after a few days of rest and treatment for an upper respiratory tract infection, fleas and ear mites, Liah is healthy, playful, and thriving with her new family in the Thousand Islands.

“She joined our household of four other cats: Cocoa, 16; Wanda, 9; James, 7; and Vito, the youngest. The timing felt meant to be, as our oldest cat, Cocoa, was nearing the end of her life, and Liah brought a spark of new energy to the house,” Cliff said.

“Although she is by far the tiniest of our cats she has virtually zero fear and keeps her siblings on their toes!”
