Giants Host Former Pro Bowl WR for Workout

The New York Giants have yet to have a true replacement emerge for star wide receiver Malik Nabers after his season-ending injury earlier this season. As a result, the Giants are continuing to look elsewhere for help at the position, which has led them to a former Pro Bowler eager for another opportunity.

Former Pro Bowler receiver Diontae Johnson is currently a free agent, and the Giants brought him in for a workout on Tuesday.

According to Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan, Johnson was one of the 11 players who worked out for the team on Tuesday. Notably, former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Jaylen Johnson was the only other wideout to take part in the workout.

At 29 years of age, it sure seems like Diontae Johnson would likely be able to play a role in the NFL if given the opportunity, whether that be in New York or elsewhere.

However, Johnson’s reputation has notably taken a hit since leaving Pittsburgh after refusing to enter a game last season for the Baltimore Ravens. This resulted in him being suspended by the team and ultimately released.

On paper, Johnson certainly seems like a low-risk, high-reward potential signing for the Giants, given how productive he has proven to be over his six-year career. Especially given the fact that New York will likely be forced to be a more pass-heavy offense in light of Cam Skattebo’s recent season-ending injury.

Sitting at 2-6 on the season, the Giants’ focus may soon shift from competing in the NFC to simply getting rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart as many tools as possible to develop as a player.

Johnson could very well aid in that if he were to come in with the right mindset. So it will certainly be interesting to see whether New York pursues the former Steelers star any further after this workout.
