The Philadelphia Phillies fell short of their ultimate goal again this year, but their team could take a huge step back in the offseason.
Kyle Schwarber is headed for free agency, and the Phillies need to do everything in their power to land a reunion with the slugger. Schwarber is likely going to land a huge contract, and the Phillies have the money to be the team to land him on the open market.
NBC Sports’ Matthew Pouliot recently projected Schwarber would sign a massive four-year deal worth $128 million in free agency.
“It’s hard to see who else might step up for Schwarber. He doesn’t work for the Dodgers or Yankees and probably not the Giants or Cubs,” Pouliot wrote. “Seattle might be the best fit of them all, but it’d be quite the radical change from Mariners ownership to come up with the kind of money it would take to sign him.
“The Tigers have a greater need for a right-handed bat and probably don’t want to make Kerry Carpenter a full-time outfielder. Maybe the Red Sox will get really aggressive, but the best bet now is that Schwarber stays put.”
If Schwarber is going to sign on a deal of this length and value, there are bound to be some other suitors in his sweepstakes.
At $128 million over four years, the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and plenty of others could get involved. The Phillies are bound to have some competition.
