Bill Belichick’s first season as North Carolina head coach is winding to a whimpering close, but an ACC win over Syracuse under the Friday Night Lights would sure turn some frowns upside down at Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels make the trip to the JMA Wireless Dome following four straight defeats, the only positive being that the Orange enters the fixture on the same losing streak.

Syracuse has also lost the last two meetings between these programs, failing to score more than seven points in either outing (in 2023 and 2020). That’s one thing Belichick will be hoping remains the same for his side, with the Tar Heels having seemingly lost a lot of the offensive ammunition that paved the way to those results.

A major factor in the Orange’s decline has been the injury to starting quarterback Cade Klubnik, with the current losing streak starting just as he got sidelined. Replacement Rickie Collins has struggled to force form in his stead, though it must be noted Syracuse’s schedule hasn’t worked in the sophomore’s favor.

Not that North Carolina thrower Gio Lopez has had much better fortune in the pocket for Belichick, struggling to get much out of an offense that has mostly failed to impress. That includes a stagnant running game that has yet to produce a 100-yard game for any player, setting the stage for a race to avoid the cellar this weekend.
