Blue Jays Lose 6-Year Veteran to Free Agency After Shoulder Injury
The Toronto Blue Jays are in offseason mode, and some of their players from last year are starting to make decisions on their own futures. Pitcher Ryan Burr has elected free agency after the team outrighted him from the 40-man roster, according to his transaction log.
Burr was traded to the Blue Jays last season from the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in 34 games for the Blue Jays in 2024 but also spent time in the minor leagues. Last year, he played in just two games for the Blue Jays. He started the year on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. He made his debut in July, but was quickly shut down again.
He had right shoulder capsule surgery and might not be ready for the start of the 2026 season. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Chicago White Sox. He has a 4.02 career ERA. In 34 games for the Blue Jays in 2024, he had a 4.13 ERA. However, he struck out 33.6% of his batters.

His injury may complicate his free agency, but some organization may see something they like with his stuff pre-injury. He is 31 years old and may be able to find a minor league contract.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays will need to find new arms to load their bullpen with. Even though Burr did not play much of a role last season, he came into the season with a role. Having bullpen depth is always important for a team with World Series aspirations.
