Red Sox DFA Flamethrowing Righty After Just 22 Games
The Boston Red Sox returned many players from the 60-day injured list Thursday. Players who are returned from the 60-day injured list need a spot on the 40-man roster.
To make room, the Red Sox designated Luis Guerrero for assignment.
Guerreo only appeared in 20 games for the Red Sox. The right-handed reliever pitched in 144 minor league games for the Red Sox before making his debut. He had a 3.22 ERA and finished 88 games. His fastball sits in the upper 90s, and he also throws a slider and changeup.
He was put on the team’s 40-man roster in September last year and played in nine games for the Red Sox. Last season, he pitched in 13 games before landing on the injured list. He pitched in the minors toward the end of the season on a rehab assignment, but did not return to the big leagues.

In the big leagues last year, his fastball averaged 96.5 mph. He had 10 strikeouts on the season and posted a 4.15 ERA. He has promising stuff, but was never able to pitch with consistent command. In his short big league career, he has posted a 5.3 walks per nine innings.
The Red Sox will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. His potential could lead a team to take a chance on him. However, his injury may make teams wary of taking him on as a project.
