A pregnant woman from the Midwest was told some shocking news at her very first ultrasound.
Savannah Harrington told Newsweek her appointment wasn’t scheduled—it was an emergency scan after she had been experiencing unexpected pain early in her pregnancy.
“I didn’t know it at the time, but I was a lot earlier [in my pregnancy] than I had initially thought,” Harrington said.
What the doctor saw on the screen stopped her in her tracks: three small, round shapes that looked like potential gestational sacs. Essentially, Harrington was told they didn’t know whether she might be carrying one, two or three babies.
“The doctor didn’t specifically say that it could be triplets, but he did say he couldn’t confirm how many babies there were,” Harrington said.
For Harrington and her husband Dante, the thought of triplets was shocking but exciting all the same.
The first-time mom had to undergo more blood tests and was instructed to return in two weeks for another ultrasound scan since it was too early to confirm how many babies she was actually carrying.
Those next couple of weeks felt like a strange in-between. While many parents might have been consumed by anxiety, the couple found comfort in faith.
“We both believe that children are blessings from God, so that was a major source of peace during that two-week process of not knowing how many children we might be bringing into the world,” Harrington said.
When the day of the follow-up scan finally arrived, the mystery was solved—not triplets, but twins.
In a twist, the babies turned out to be boys, just like Dante and his twin brother. “My mother-in-law had the same experience of having twin boys her first go around as well, so to know now that I’m also having twin boys for my first time, it’s surreal, and [feels] like a movie!”
Harrington posted her story in a clip on TikTok (@thesavannaharrington), which been viewed over 670,000 times. Many other moms shared similar experiences in the comments.
“I will never forget our doctor saying to us, ‘Well you’re having AT LEAST twins,’” one user said.
“This was me! Turned out to be just one baby,” another shared.
“The doctor should not have said anything until the two weeks was up,” a third suggested.
Harrington understood why people would be anxious to know how many babies they were having. “Three at once might be a lot to process for a first-time mom,” she said. “I think that would be anyone’s reaction if they had first thought that they were going to be having more than two.”
