San Francisco Supermarket Shooting Leaves Five Wounded
Five people were wounded in a shooting outside a Safeway supermarket in San Francisco’s Outer Richmond neighborhood Saturday night, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle that first responders traveled to area hospitals to assess victim conditions. Police characterized the shooting as an isolated incident, stating there was no general threat to the public. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.
Newsweek reached out to the San Francisco Police Department via email on Sunday for comment.
Why It Matters
The Outer Richmond neighborhood has seen residents shaken by the violence in an area typically known for its family-friendly atmosphere.
The shooting also tests the response capabilities of San Francisco’s new mayor, Daniel Lurie, who took office with promises to address public safety concerns.
What To Know
Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 9 p.m. found multiple victims near the store at Fulton Street and Great Highway. One adult man sustained life-threatening injuries, while four juveniles suffered non-life-threatening wounds. All victims were transported to local hospitals.
The shooting occurred outside a Safeway location near Golden Gate Park, sending bystanders into panic. Eyewitness Tommy Corcoran, 19, described hiding behind a log in the nearby park after hearing gunshots and seeing people flee. Detectives are working to gather evidence and identify suspects while the community processes the trauma of violence erupting in a familiar neighborhood setting.
Police Capt. Kevin Lee told The Chronicle the shooting stemmed from a fight.
What People Are Saying
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement: “This kind of violence does not represent who we are as a city, and we will never tolerate it.”

What Happens Next?
Authorities continue investigating the shooting, working to identify suspects and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact the department at 415-575-4444 or submit anonymous tips via text to TIP411.
