Chiefs Considering Leaving Arrowhead Stadium, Relocating Out of Missouri
The Kansas City Chiefs have been one of the NFL’s most dominant teams of the last decade, winning three Super Bowl championships and playing in seven straight AFC Championship games.
And while the league’s latest dynasty has called Arrowhead Stadium home since 1972, that could soon change according to a recent report.
Pete Mundo of KCMO Talk Radio recently reported that the Chiefs are looking into potentially leaving the 76,000-plus seat stadium in Kansas City, Missouri and are exploring building a new stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, at the intersection of Interstate 435 and Interstate 70 near super-regional shopping mall, Tanger Kansas City at Legends.

“NEWS: As I just shared exclusively on 95.7FM @kcmotalkradio, the #Chiefs have an RFP out to multiple firms to build a new stadium in KCK at 435/70,” Mundo reported. “It would be domed with 65,000 seats. Plus a retractable grass field.
“The team will whittle down from 10 firms to two by early next year for a ‘design competition.’ This does NOT mean they are going to Kansas. But simply that the team continues to take steps forward to seriously explore a move across the state line.”
While the decision to leave Arrowhead behind is far from a done deal—the team is only in the information gathering part of relocation—moving to a new location is something that is an actual possibility.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt confirmed last month that he’s had discussions about both renovating Arrowhead Stadium and building a new venue, and making a final decision could take a while.

“We have had some preliminary conversations with (Jackson County, MO executive Phil LeVota),” Hunt said, via KMBC.com. “He obviously has a lot of things on his plate, but he expressed eagerness to work with us, and we expect to expand those conversations in the coming weeks.
“… We’re still working on both the renovation of GEHA Field at Arrowhead, as well as the possibility of building a new stadium somewhere in the metropolitan area.”
Relocation is a very real possibility for the Chiefs. The team’s lease with Arrowhead Stadium expires in January 2031, and Jackson County residents opposed the city’s sales tax proposal designed to help fund the stadiums for the Chiefs and MLB’s Kansas City Royals.
