House Democrat Announces Retirement Just 4 Days After Nancy Pelosi

Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, the first Black woman elected to represent New Jersey in Congress, said Monday she will not seek reelection next year. Watson Coleman, 80, said her decision came after “tremendous thought and reflection” and conversations with her family.

First elected in 2014, she represents New Jersey’s 12th District, which includes Trenton and Princeton, and has long been a progressive voice focused on fighting poverty and promoting economic equality. Her departure adds to a growing list of House Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who plan to retire after this term.
