Trey Kaufman-Renn and the Purdue Boilermakers went head-to-head with Alabama Basketball on Thursday night.
In a matchup of two top 10 teams, Kafuman-Ren put together a stat line that puts him in company with some of the top players college basketball has seen over the past 30 years.
Kaufman-Renn checked in for 34 minutes on Thursday. He shot 9-16 from the field, making one of his two shots from beyond the arc. He ended the game with 19 points, which marked second on his team, next to Braden Smith.
He was dominant on the board, grabbing 15 rebounds, which marked a game-high. Eight of those rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor. Kaufman-Renn also accounted for five assists, turning the ball over just twice.
With that line, Kaufman-Renn has become the third player in the last 30 seasons to have at least 15 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in an AP Top-10 matchup, according to ESPN. He joins Joe Forte, who accomplished that feat in 2001, and Tim Duncan, who did it in 1996.
Forte’s run occurred at North Carolina. In 2001, he was a first-team All-American and the ACC Player of the Year. He went on to land in the NBA as a first-round pick with the Boston Celtics, getting taken 21st overall. He spent just a couple of seasons playing in the NBA, before bouncing around the world, playing hoops internationally from 2005 up until 2015.
As for Tim Duncan, he went on to have major success beyond college. After a successful stint at Wake Forest, Duncan was the first-overall pick for the San Antonio Spurs in 1997. He spent his entire career in San Antonio, loading up an impressive resume, which included five NBA championships, three NBA Finals MVPs, two NBA MVPs, 15 All-Star appearances, and much more. In the NCAA, Duncan was one of the best players of his time, earning multiple ACC Player of the Year awards and much more.
Kaufman-Renn is in the midst of year four with Purdue. When he debuted with the team in 2022, he came off the bench for 35 games, scoring 4.5 points per game, and coming down with 1.8 rebounds per outing.
By year two, he was a full-time starter with 17.0 minutes of action on average. Last season, he saw the court for 30.8 minutes per game, which helped him average 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in 36 games.
Kaufman-Renn was injured leading up to the Alabama matchup, but ended up getting clearance to play. He didn’t miss a step, as he joined elite NCAA company with his performance, as Purdue defeated ‘Bama 87-80.
