Cristiano Ronaldo’s plan of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in record time has been thrown up ahead of Sunday’s do-or-die encounter with Armenia. And to make matters worse, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner won’t be available for his side in their last chance at automatic World Cup qualification.
Disaster struck for Roberto Martinez on Thursday after Portugal suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in its penultimate fixture in UEFA qualifying Group F. Ronaldo was shown a straight red card in Dublin after elbowing an opponent in the back, retaliating after he felt his shirt had been tugged unnecessarily by a member of the opposition.
Three more points at home to Armenia, who sit bottom of Group F, would be sufficient to tie up top spot at the final hurdle. However, any dropped points would give second-place Hungary or the Republic of Ireland in third their opportunity to steal in and snatch the summit, potentially leaving Portugal to settle for a runner-up finish and a route to the World Cup via the play-offs.
