What Caused the Cloudflare Outage? Company Cites ‘Unusual’ Spike
Cloudflare noted a “spike in unusual traffic” before some of its services experienced an outage early on Tuesday morning, causing problems across the internet as users of major digital platforms, including X and ChatGPT, reported issues.
But a spokesperson for Cloudflare, a cybersecurity and web technology firm based in San Francisco, California, said “we do not yet know the cause” of the spike in a statement.
“We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors,” the spokesperson said. “After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic.”
Shortly after 9:40 a.m. ET, Cloudflare said it had resolved the problem.
“A fix has been implemented and we believe the incident is now resolved,” the status update said. “We are continuing to monitor for errors to ensure all services are back to normal.”
Other websites and services that experienced issues included U.S. President Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform, Shopify, Dropbox, Coinbase, online game League of Legends, Moody’s and NJ Transit.
Moody’s website displayed an Error Code 500 and instructed individuals to visit Cloudflare’s website for more information.
