Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Charged With Stealing $5M in FEMA Disaster Funds
A federal grand jury in Miami has indicted Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick on charges that she and several co-defendants stole $5 million in FEMA disaster funds and funneled the money into her 2021 congressional campaign, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
The indictment alleges Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother diverted an overpayment tied to a COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract and laundered it through multiple accounts to disguise its source.
Prosecutors say part of the misappropriated funds was routed through straw donors to boost her campaign and that she also conspired with her tax preparer to file a false federal return.
Cherfilus-McCormick and three others face lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
