In a viral TikTok video, a Shih Tzu dog was found abandoned at a local park with all of his stuff—but despite his heartbreaking story, he’s the sweetest pup.
The video, shared on Friday under the username @lolitatheshihtzu, shows the pup looking sad and concerned, as if worrying about what will happen to him after being abandoned by the only family he’s ever known and trusted.
“Someone left him at a park with all of his stuff… (We bought him that shirt),” reads layover text in the clip.
The caption explains: “This little guy was abandoned at a park with all of his stuff. My colleague and her friend found him. He’s getting taken to the vet tomorrow to get checked out.
“He has a little growth on his leg so we’re hoping it’s something minor. He’s the sweetest little fella.”
Almost 3 million dogs entered American shelters in 2024, and according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, only about 2 million of them were adopted. It is estimated that about 554,000 were returned to their owner, 334,000 were euthanized, and 524,000 were transferred to other organizations.
Among all pups, large, adult dogs are more commonly surrendered. Shelters often receive more surrenders of big breeds because they’re harder to manage, cost more, and may not fit well in typical homes.
Certain breed traits also contribute to abandonment: high energy, guarding instincts, or demanding training can overwhelm inexperienced owners. In addition, adult and senior dogs—regardless of breed—are less likely to be adopted than puppies.
Medical needs and housing restrictions also play a role. Moreover, breeds often over-represented in shelters include pit bulls and their mixes, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, Chihuahuas, and boxers.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 754,800 views and 160,100 likes on the platform.
One user, Darleneeeomgeeee, commented: “STOPPPP HE LOOKS SO SAD & WORRIED.”
Hannah Mae said: “This dog looks well taken care of I hope the owner is okay you never know what people are going through.”
Sade’ added: “Imagine never seeing your family again and not knowing why you were left or having to get used to a whole new random family… Omg poor baby.”
