Donald Trump Scores Redistricting Win in North Carolina
A federal three-judge panel on Wednesday cleared North Carolina to use a newly redrawn congressional map crafted to flip a Democratic-held seat as part of President Donald Trump’s multistate redistricting push ahead of the 2026 elections. The map targets the state’s lone swing district, represented by Democratic Rep. Don Davis, an African American lawmaker whose 1st District has had continuous Black representation for more than three decades.
Judges denied requests for a preliminary injunction after a November hearing and separately upheld several other districts first enacted in 2023 that helped Republicans gain three seats in 2024. North Carolina is among several states where Trump has broken with tradition by directing mid-decade map changes not ordered by the courts as Republicans work to preserve their narrow U.S. House majority.
