The New York Mets have started to address their pitching staff already by signing Devin Williams. The Mets had a 4.03 ERA last season, which ranked 18th in all of baseball.
Edwin Díaz is a free agent and Williams is insurance at closer in case the Mets lose Díaz. While adding Williams is a great move, the Mets’ biggest concern may be the starting rotation. The team wants to be a contender, but does not have an ace. David Stearns has ties to the Milwaukee Brewers, and Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted he would trade for Freddy Peralta.
After shutting down the idea of trading Peralta earlier in the offseason, the Brewers may be open to the idea now. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal recently reported that the Brewers may open the door for a Peralta trade.
“Perhaps this was inevitable, but the interest in right-hander Freddy Peralta is so significant, the Milwaukee Brewers are now considering ‘cracking the door open’ for trade discussions, according to a person briefed on their situation,” Rosenthal wrote on Wednesday.
Peralta would be the clear No. 1 option for the Mets. He is a two-time All-Star and just had a career year. He is slated to play on an $8 million club option next season, but he may be out of the Brewers’ budget beyond that. The Brewers traded Josh Hader, Williams and Corbin Burnes before they hit free agency, knowing they would not pay them on the open market. Peralta could be next.
