John Roberts Halts Court Ruling in Immigration Judges’ Speech Limits Case

The Supreme Court’s Chief Justice John Roberts put a temporary hold on a lower circuit court decision in a case related to a policy requiring immigration judges to obtain permission before making any “official” speeches.

The case was brought to the Supreme Court by the administration of President Donald Trump, asking the justices for emergency relief. U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer had asked the justices to block a ruling by a federal appeals court that sent the dispute back to a federal trial court for fact-finding.

In Roberts brief Friday order, staying the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, he also ordered that responses to the application be filed by December 10.
