Princess Kate and Meghan Markle’s matching looks went viral on TikTok where fans celebrated their similarities in stark contrast to the royal rift.
Supporters of Kate and Meghan have been arguing for years about whether one has copied the other’s style and a TikTok post showed some of their most similar outfits side by side.
However, instead of criticizing either princess, the content creator chose to present their similarities as a positive while fans in the comments celebrated the royal double that could have been had personal differences not separated Harry and Meghan from William and Kate.
Why It Matters
The post was liked 25,000 times and viewed 141,000 times after it showed a series of clips of Kate and Meghan with the Charli XCX song Girl, So Confusing playing over the top. The song is about Charli XCX’s complex friendship with the singer Lorde and how they “worked it out on the remix,” a rapprochement that Meghan and Kate have never achieved.
What to Know
The video shows Kate and Meghan during a variety of royal visits, including some where they wore strikingly similar outfits.
Among them was Meghan Markle’s long tartan coat, which she wore with a black turtleneck sweater on a visit to Social Bite, in Edinburgh, Scotland, on February 13, 2018. Princess Kate wore a similar long tartan coat and gray turtleneck sweater to Westminster Abbey, in December, 2022, where she planted a tree in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
Another moment showed them both wearing long blue coats and black turtleneck sweater—Kate at the Foundling Museum, in London, on January 19, 2022, and Meghan at a Kensington Palace reception launching Together: Our Community Cookbook on September 20, 2018. The book contained recipes from the female chefs at The Hubb Community Kitchen, which was affected by the Grenfell Tower fire, a blaze that killed 72 people, including 18 children, in the same London borough as Kensington Palace in 2017.
Meghan and Kate’s relationship never really blossomed but was also never as explosive as the rift between Harry and Meghan and Prince William.
When Kensington Palace staff accused Meghan of bullying, William took their side while Prince Harry argued it was aides brought in from the world of British politics who were responsible for souring relations.
Needless to say, Meghan was accused in the British press of making Kate cry during a dispute over bridesmaids’ dresses in the run up to Meghan and Harry’s May 2018 wedding in stories published in the Daily Telegraph and later The Sun toward the end of that year.
And Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 that the reverse was true: “The reverse happened. And I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding. And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized. And she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.”
