Demand Grows for College Football Playoff Overhaul After Tulane, JMU Blowouts

Everyone loves a good underdog in sports, right?

When March rolls around, nothing is better than seeing a Cinderella from a small school you’ve never heard of pop up during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and face a giant. While a majority of the time they become cannon fodder to the overall story of a main character blue blood program, those times where David defeats Goliath make it all worth it.

Well, maybe not in college football.

On Saturday, following a Miami vs. Texas A&M rock fight that ended in cinematic fashion as the Hurricanes knocked off the Aggies with a last-second interception, two blowouts occurred in the College Football Playoff.

Although that has been a regular occurrence throughout the now decade-plus history of the CFP, it was the two Group of Five schools, Tulane and James Madison, who were embarrassed in front of the national audience.

There was no David vs. Goliath storyline here. Just bigger, faster, more well-paid athletes beating up on plucky kids whose coaches are leaving for bigger schools by the time they wake up tomorrow.

LSU’s Lane Kiffin sent a savage, one-word message as he watched his former school, Ole Miss, and Oregon blow out the two G5 schools.

Barstool Sports’ head college football personality, Brandon Walker, did not hold back from his criticism of the system.

ESPN’s Ryan Clark also continued the dogpile of the Playoff system on social media.

CBS Sports’ Tom Casale put in his own take as well.

While a majority of pundits and personalities punched down on the system during the two blowouts, there was another side in the war of words as well. Many fans stood up for the G5 schools, pointing out that higher seeds have done worse to powerhouse programs over the Playoff’s lifespan.
