Vanderbilt improved to 2-0 in true road games, surviving a 32.3% shooting night that included hitting just 6-of-31 from 3-point range, along with 20 turnovers to take a 77-70 overtime decision at Memphis on Wednesday night. Duke Miles finished with 22 points and six steals, Tyler Tanner added 16 points and four thefts, and Jalen Washington came off the bench for 14 points as the Commodores continue their best start since opening 16-0 in 2007-08.
Wake Forest also survived a scare on Wednesday night when Myles Colvin’s 3-pointer with 49 seconds left gave the Demon Deacons the lead for good in their 71-68 victory over visiting Longwood. Juke Harris led Wake Forest with 19 points and eight rebounds, with Nate Calmese scoring 12 points and Colvin finishing with 11. Colvin’s decisive 3-pointer was the lone make from deep for the Deacons in the second half.
Vanderbilt is 6-4 all-time against Wake Forest and has won the last two meetings, most recently an 86-64 victory at the Maui Invitational on Nov. 24, 2015. Miles averages 17.1 points and 2.6 steals, with Tanner getting 15.8 points and 2.5 steals per game and Devin McGlockton posting 10.2 points and 7.1 rebounds a night. Harris averages 20.0 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Demon Deacons, while Colvin and Tre’Von Spillers each score 13.3 points per game, and Calmese dishes 5.3 assists per outing.
