The New York Yankees have not made any big moves this offseason, but that could be changing soon. They are reportedly trying to retain Cody Bellinger, but are also discussing a trade for Edward Cabrera of the Miami Marlins, per the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
Cabrera had a career year last season. He made more than 20 starts for the first time in his career and struck out a career high 150 batters. He has 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings in his career. He is under club control through 2028 and has been a popular name in trade rumors recently.
The Yankees have a strong rotation already, but will be missing some key players early in the year. Brian Cashman has noted his desire to add a starter to help get the Yankees through the early part of the season, but Cabrera would be more than that. He would be a regular in the rotation and likely push someone out of the mix when everyone is healthy. However, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicted the Yankees would not acquire Cabrera and that the Marlins would hold on to him.
“With it looking more and more likely that Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera will both be staying put, this has a chance to be one of the better starting rotations in the National League,” Reuter wrote of the Marlins.
The Marlins are not expected to be contenders next season. However, Cabrera is one of the bright spots on their roster. He is a great young player and would be a great addition to the Yankees. Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón are expected to start the year on the injured list, so it’s no surprise the Yankees are interested in adding a pitcher.
The Yankees also have Max Fried, Luis Gil, Ryan Yarbrough and Cam Schlittler. Adding Cabrera would likely push Gil or Schlittler out of the mix if everyone is healthy. However, that does not seem to be stopping the Yankees from discussing a trade for Cabrera.
