The New York Mets came into this offseason with a major hole on their roster. Their starting rotation struggled down the stretch last year, and pitching ultimately held them out of the postseason.
As a result, the Mets seemingly need to add to their rotation this winter. There are plenty of options in free agency and on the trade block for the Mets to pursue. Players like Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez have been closely connected to the Mets.
On Thursday, FanSided’s Robert Murray reported the Mets and starting pitcher David Peterson agreed on a one-year, $8.1 million deal that helped them avoid heading to arbitration this offseason.
Peterson, 30, has been with the Mets for the past six years. He hasn’t been an ace, but he’s a usable arm at the back end of the rotation.
For a chunk of last season, it seemed as though Peterson had turned a corner and emerged as a star, but he fell back to earth down the stretch. His struggles helped keep the Mets out of the postseason.
Either way, the lefty is a solid option coming off an All-Star season. His 2024 campaign was his best to date, as he posted a sub-3.00 ERA on the year.
The Mets are going to need to add more to their rotation, but keeping Peterson on the roster for under $10 million is a good move in the right direction.
