Fernando Mendoza Sends Message to Miami Ahead of National Championship
The Indiana Hoosiers have become one of the most remarkable stories in college football history under head coach Curt Cignetti, who is only in his second season with the program.
After reaching the College Football Playoff last season, Indiana has taken an even bigger leap this year. On Friday night in Atlanta, the Hoosiers dominated the Oregon Ducks 56–22 to secure a spot in the national championship against the Miami Hurricanes.
Indiana remains unbeaten, captured the Big Ten title, and has now delivered back-to-back blowout wins to reach this stage. At the center of that success—aside from Cignetti’s leadership and roster development—has been quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who threw five touchdown passes against Oregon.

Following the win, Mendoza—known for his viral postgame interviews—delivered a clear message of respect for Miami and head coach Mario Cristobal. He spoke about the strength of the Hurricanes and the significance of playing the national championship in Miami, the city where he grew up.
“It’s homecoming for myself going to Miami,” Mendoza said. “What a better story. However, Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes, fantastic team. They have great leadership and they’re extremely tough on defense. It’s going to be a great matchup.
“I think playing in any national championship is fantastic. It means a little bit more to me. I used to be able to walk to the University of Miami… but I’m also just very happy for the city of Miami to get the opportunity as well and just can’t wait to play in Hard Rock Stadium.”
Miami was able to rally late Thursday night against the Ole Miss Rebels to punch its ticket to the national championship, and interestingly enough, Cristobal actually played high school football with Mendoza’s father, Fernando Sr.
Indiana has never won a national title, and while Miami has enjoyed several historically dominant eras, the Hurricanes haven’t won a championship since 2001.
