The New York Mets signed Luke Weaver away from the New York Yankees this offseason, and he appeared on “Foul Territory” to discuss his free agency.
Weaver joined the Yankees in 2023 and became a major part of their bullpen. He confirmed that the Yankees never made him a contract offer, but he has no hard feelings toward the organization and the clubhouse.
“They didn’t have an official offer or anything like that,” Weaver said on “Foul Territory.” ” … I really loved and valued every single person in that clubhouse. I would’ve loved to continue and for things to roll, but we know there’s always a chapter that ends and somewhere else you have to pick up. I got all love for those guys. I hope they do really well and achieve all they want. There’s no bad blood on my end.”
Weaver had a 3.22 ERA in 129 games for the Yankees. He wore many hats for Aaron Boone, serving as a closer, setup man, multi-inning guy and basically any other role the team needed him in. However, the Yankees did not see a reason to bring him or Devin Williams back.
Unlike Williams, Weaver actually had a good year for the Yankees. He had a 3.62 ERA in 64 games. However, the Yankees traded for Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval last season. They likely felt that Bird would find his way back to the big leagues and did not want to spend big in the reliever market.
