Dog Returned To Shelter 6 Months After Adoption–Her Reaction Is Devastating

A dog returned to a Georgia shelter just six months after being adopted has had the most devastating of reactions to being back in her kennel.
In a video posted to TikTok under the handle @jayedreamsofpaws, Jayah Jones, an Atlanta-based shelter volunteer and self-proclaimed “dog mom who loves all things dogs,” shared footage of a shelter dog by the name of Milkbun in her enclosure.
Milkbun is an adorably diminutive pup, but that only adds to the sense of injustice surrounding her heartbreaking situation.
As the onscreen text explains, Milkbun “was recently returned after being adopted for six months.” She appears to be struggling with the realization she is back in the shelter and can be seen “trembling in her kennel” in the clip, which can be watched here.
Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, dogs often struggle in shelter environments.
A 2016 study published in the journal Dog Behavior highlighted this. Scientists monitored the behavior of 15 cross-breed dogs kept in a shelter over a month to see if they experience any behavioral changes.
Researchers witnessed a notable deterioration among the dogs, many of whom exhibited restlessness and other concerning behavioral changes as time wore on. Though little is known about Milkbun’s previous experience in the shelter, it’s clear from watching Jones’s video that it was a negative one and one she clearly didn’t want to experience again.
That was something Jones picked up on at the shelter that day.
“I think she knows she is back. I know she knows this is not a happy place,” Jones wrote alongside that.
She also suspects that, on some level, Milkbun is grappling with feelings of confusion and rejection. She was adopted. She had a home. Yet now she is back at the place she was so desperate and so happy to escape from.
“She knows she struggled to get adopted the last time she was here. And in a moments notice she has been returned to the shelter,” Jones wrote.
The shelter volunteer remembers Milkbun from her first stint at the shelter. That was part of the reason why she chose to share the heartbreaking footage of her to social media. She hoped it might make others reconsider taking their unwanted pet to the shelter.
“I was clocking in this morning and instantly recognized her, standing there staring at me, shaking in her kennel, terrified. This is the reality when you think the only option is to bring your dog to the shelter,” she wrote.
“Please consider rehoming your pets. The shelter should always be your last option.”
Jones’s only wish now is for someone to step in and help Milkbun. Take her out of this situation and give her the forever home she so desperately deserves.
Until then, Milkbun will be in the care of Fulton County Animal Services.
