Golden Retriever’s Face Says It All After Realizing New Puppy Is Staying

The hilarious moment a golden retriever realized the new puppy would be sticking around for longer than expected has gone viral—and, let’s just say, he didn’t look too pleased.

The amusing video was shared by his owner Idalis Bruno on the dogs’ dedicated TikTok account (@usandourgoldens), showing the exact second everything clicked for 2-year-old Beau.

Bruno, 28, watched as Beau sniffed around Wylder the puppy after he had fallen asleep, and, expecting to witness a cute brotherly moment, she decided to start filming. That didn’t quite work out, however, as Bruno told Newsweek that it looked as if Beau’s “life as an only child flashed before his eyes.”

The clip shows Bruno sniffing the pup to size him up before reality hit suddenly. The look on his face changed immediately as it dawned on him that this was no brief playdate—the little fluff ball was still around “past visiting hours.”

Bruno, from Savannah, Georgia, said: “What we thought was going to be a cute moment actually ended in uncontrollable laughter as we watched Beau investigate the situation with both confusion and concern.

“His head tilt says it all. He probably thought they were having a playdate until the night officially came to an end and saw the puppy had fallen asleep in what was once his playpen,” Bruno continued.

In the days since the video was posted, it has racked up more than 144,000 views and over 12,900 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Many viewers couldn’t get enough of the golden retriever’s unimpressed reaction, calling it one of the most-relatable pet moments they have seen in a while.

The caption layered over the video jokes that this was the precise moment the dog “realizes the new puppy is spending the night.” Based on his expression, he wasn’t exactly thrilled about the arrangement. The caption alongside the video jests about what he might have been thinking, suggesting: “Welcome home or pack your bags?”

The first few weeks with Wylder were filled with sleepless nights for Bruno and her partner Patrick, 29, not to mention plenty of sighs and side eye from Beau. Once Beau realized it wasn’t just an extended playdate, he came to realize that “big brothering is a hard job.”

Beau and Wylder aren’t just siblings by proxy, but they are also related by blood as they have the same mom.

How To Help Dogs Adjust to New Siblings

While the golden retriever’s reaction may be comedic, introducing a new puppy to an older dog can be a delicate process. According to guidance from the American Kennel Club, the transition works best with patience and structure. The AKC recommends introducing dogs on neutral ground first—such as outside in the yard or during a walk—so neither feels territorial. Allowing them to meet gradually, without pressure, helps both animals feel safe.

The AKC also advises giving both dogs their own designated spaces inside the home, including crates or quiet areas where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. Supervised interaction is essential during the early days, and owners should reward calm behavior with treats and praise so both canines associate positive feelings with each other. Maintaining the older dog’s routine—walks, meals, and one-on-one attention—can also reduce jealousy or anxiety as they adjust to sharing their human.

Fortunately, Beau’s initial shock didn’t last long. Since Wylder was welcomed into the family in January 2025, Bruno has frequently shared updates featuring the two goldens playing, cuddling, or resting side by side.

Bruno said: “Wylder is the definition of a little brother; always wanting to be involved in whatever his big brother is doing, following him around like a shadow and trying to steal everything. Beau, on the other hand, makes it known he was here first.

“Beau has always been a great sport about his baby brother. It definitely took some time for him to warm up, but they’re now the best of friends and always looking for each other,” Bruno continued.

How Did TikTok React?

After the clip went viral, social media users were quick to laud Beau’s priceless reaction to his new sibling. Bruno told Newsweek that the responses to the video are “absolutely hysterical” and provided plenty of laughter.

One commenter said the dog was “not impressed a little bit.”

Another TikTok user wrote: “What do you mean this isn’t just a sleepover?”

A third person replied: “He’s like, ‘you better wake up, you’re gonna miss your bus!’”

One commenter joked: “What do you mean he’s here to stay?”
