Donovan Mitchell Reacts to LeBron James-Cavaliers Rumors
At 41 years old, LeBron James is reaching the later stages of his NBA career. The 22-time All-Star is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
If James decides to continue his career into the 2026-2027 season, ongoing speculation suggests that he may sign with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. James spent 11 seasons as a member of the Cavaliers, winning a championship with the franchise in 2016.
In an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio, Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell reacted to the possibility of teaming up with James.
“As a LeBron fan, man, to be able to be his teammate would be special. But that’s not something that’s in my control. There’s always gonna be reports, it’s natural, and it’s gonna be a thing. But my main focus right now is trying to get this championship. Whatever happens, it happens; that’s not up to me or anybody in this locker room. I’m big on believing in what I can control.”

An Ideal Destination
This season, James is averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game. He is the oldest active player in the league.
Putting his roots aside, the Cavaliers may be a strong fit for the four-time MVP. With a 34-21 record, Cleveland holds the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
James could potentially join a starting lineup featuring Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. Mitchell was selected as an All-Star reserve for the upcoming edition of the event, while Harden and Mobley earned selections last year.
This season, Mitchell is averaging 29.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. The 29-year-old guard is ranked seventh on the latest edition of the NBA’s MVP Ladder.
The Cavaliers will be seeking a fourth consecutive playoff appearance. Last year, the franchise entered as the top seed in the conference but was eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
While James has not made an official decision regarding his NBA career, Cleveland has made a compelling case as a potential destination.
