The Colorado football family was rocked by the tragic death of quarterback Dominiq Ponder on Sunday evening.
The 23-year-old signal-caller died in a single-car crash on Sunday morning around 3 a.m. in Boulder County, according to ESPN, which stated Ponder lost control of his vehicle while going around a curve before striking a guard rail and an electrical pole.
Ponder’s car also caught on fire after rolling down an embankment. It’s suspected that he was speeding, but it hasn’t been confirmed.
After the news of his passing was announced, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders took to social media to share a heartfelt message about his former QB.

“God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones,” Sanders wrote on X. “Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.”
Ponder’s college career got started at Bethune-Cookman in 2023. He completed eight passes in two games, throwing for 33 yards and two interceptions.
He transferred to Colorado in 2024 but didn’t play a snap until last year. He threw just one pass in a game against Arizona on Nov. 1.
The Colorado football program also posted its condolences on social media honoring Ponder.
“The Colorado Football family mourns the passing of Dominiq Ponder. We honor his life, his spirit, and the light he brought to Boulder. Forever a Buffalo,” the school wrote on X.
