A man in Michigan could barely believe his eyes when he saw who had been waiting for him out on his front doorstep.
Steve, from Scotts, received a Ring notification on his phone informing him someone was outside his front door. What he didn’t realize, however, was that someone happened to be a herd of cows.
Michigan is home to an estimated 1.09 million cattle, according to the USDA’s most-recent Cattle Inventory Survey. That is a lot of animals to manage, so little wonder that one or two can escape from time to time.
A whole herd is quite the story, though. The video captured on Steve’s Ring doorbell camera, which was subsequently shared with Newsweek, showcases an extraordinary scene, with three large cattle seen waiting, intimidatingly, on Steve’s porch, like debt collectors there to pick up what he owes for milk.
Steve, for his part, was stunned. “This is the first time I’ve seen cows on my porch,” he said. “I wasn’t home at the time, so I’m not sure how long they were there.” He later learned more about how the animals wound up there. “They escaped from a farm about a mile-and-a-half away,” he said.
In truth, though, Steve didn’t look at the notification when it first came through on his phone. It was only later, when he noticed the trail the animals had left all around his home, that he decided to check the video feed. “I had tracks all around my house and barn,” Steve said. “The video is from the Ring doorbell at my front door, and I got a motion notification but didn’t look at it until later. It made me laugh when I saw it, so thought I’d share it.”
This isn’t the first time a cow invasion has been caught on camera. In November 2024, a man in New Mexico was woken by the sound of eight cows mooing and generally loitering outside his home in the middle of the night.
Then, in February 2022, a herd of escaped dairy cows descended upon a Georgia neighborhood, with the resulting invasion captured on a Ring security camera. It is not just in the U.S. either. In June 2022, a U.K. resident shared footage of the moment she found her backyard overrun by a herd of roaming cows.
