Man Finds Dad’s Time Capsule From 2004—Discovers ‘Legendary Loot’

The find included the game’s original metal case, multiple discs, printed materials and even an old Xbox Live trial card, all bearing the marks of time. 

“My pops was always a fan of Halo, he also had some obsession with keeping stuff to find later,” the poster wrote. “He told me to come downstairs and help him dig through boxes for some reason, that’s when we found this old girl in a small chest. Legendary loot.” 

Photos shared alongside the post show a weathered steel Halo 2 case, its once-sleek surface now flecked with rust, as well as discs and inserts laid out on carpet. 

At the time of writing, the post has received over 3,000 upvotes and dozens of comments joking that the word “dad” alone made them feel ancient.  

The poster leaned into the sentiment, explaining that his father was instrumental in shaping his own gaming memories. He recalled growing up alongside the franchises that defined the era, describing nights where his dad played World of Warcraft while he played Halo 2 on a boxy television. Those moments, the poster said, are memories he will never forget. 

Others chimed in with similar reflections. One commenter noted they were only 30, while another said the so-called “time capsule” represented their own early teenage years. 

Several users shared their ages when Halo 2 launched, comparing milestones such as becoming parents, aunts and uncles with the passage of gaming time. “We are old, my brother,” one commenter joked. 

Some users focused on the condition of the case, asking what had caused the corrosion. The poster explained that a basement flood in 2017 may have contributed, though he added that the rust only made the find more striking. “Otherwise, the rust is kinda bad***,” he wrote. 

Others were curious whether the relics might still function. When asked if the Xbox Live code could still work, the poster replied that it might—pointing out that the scratch-off strip remained intact. 

“If someone found my box of s*** in the garage it’s just be a bunch of old game boxes like this,” another added.
