Michigan finally put away stubborn No. 16 seed Howard on Thursday, pulling away in the second half for a 101-80 victory after leading by just four at intermission. The Wolverines shot 67.3%, with Morez Johnson Jr. hitting all eight of his attempts to finish with 21 points while also getting 10 rebounds. Aday Mara added 19 points and three blocked shots, Nimari Burnett knocked down 15 points, and Elliot Cadeau handed out nine assists.
Saint Louis, returning to March Madness for the first time since 2019, dismantled eighth-seeded Georgia 102-77 on Thursday to advance. Six Billikens scored in double figures, led by Dion Brown’s 18 points. Amari McCottry added 13 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, with Robbie Avila and Ishan Sharma each dropping 12 points. Saint Louis led by 17 by halftime and held Georgia to just 34.7% shooting.
The Wolverines, who advance to their second straight Sweet Sixteen with a win, are led by Yaxel Lendeborg’s average of 14.4 points, with Johnson posting 13.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, Mara getting 11.9 points and 2.6 blocks a night, and Cadeau booking 10.0 points and 5.7 assists per contest.
The Billikens last reached the Sweet 16 in 1957, when the field included only 23 teams. Avila scores an average of 12.9 points to lead the team, while Brown gets 11.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
The winner moves on to Chicago for a regional semifinal game on Friday.
