North Carolina AD Makes First Public Comment on Hubert Davis After Collapse

North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis’ future remains up in the air following the team’s humiliating first round NCAA Tournament loss to VCU in which the Tar Heels held a 19-point lead before losing 82-78 in overtime.

Following the loss, UNC chancellor Lee Roberts revealed, “No change has been made,” before adding, “At the end of every season, we look at everything.” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the two sides plan to meet this weekend before coming to a decision on Davis’ future early next week.

While Davis and Roberts offered comment on the coach’s future, out-going athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who is stepping down from his role on June 1, hadn’t offered a public comment until Saturday afternoon.

In a conversation with college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Cunningham parroted the same vernacular doled out by the university’s chancellor when discussing Davis’ future.

Cunningham told Rothstein “that he and the Tar Heels’ administration including the Chancellor are evaluating all aspects of the school’s basketball program and will continue to have discussions over the coming days.”

Hubert Davis’ Contract Situation, Potential Buyout

According to Davis’ contract North Carolina would owe the coach $5.312 million if he were to be fired on April 1. His deal runs through June 30, 2030 and in addition to his $1,250,000 annual base salary, he is earning $1,800,00 in supplemental pay for the 2026 contract year.

The supplemental part of his compensation increases by $100,000 in each of the remaining four years left on the contract. He also earns $50,000 in annual expenses from the university and has separate yearly payments from Nike ($200,000) and Learfield Sports ($500,000).
