Cam Johnson Speaks Out on UNC Program Amid Hubert Davis Uncertainty
The North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program is facing a crucial decision following its first-round NCAA Tournament loss.
This past Thursday, UNC fell to the No. 11 seed VCU Rams with an 82-78 final score in overtime — surrendering a 19-point second-half lead in the Round of 64.
This postseason loss marked the Tar Heels’ second consecutive first-round exit of the Hubert Davis coaching era, sparking serious questions regarding his future as head coach of the historic college basketball program.
Prominent University of North Carolina figures have differing views on the situation. Some believe the program should stick with Davis, others believe its time for a new era in Chapel Hill.
Everyone agrees that the program needs better results in order to live up to its lofty standards.
Cam Johnson, a former North Carolina basketball star under Roy Williams, recently weighed in on the Tar Heels’ NCAA Tournament loss during an episode of “The Old Man and The Three” podcast.
“It’s a little bit of a tumultuous time in the North Carolina basketball fanbase,” Johnson said. “Yes, they should have been able to handle that lead better, milk the clock, be efficient and handle business that way … But sometimes bad things happen.”

Johnson referenced the fact that the Tar Heels were without their best player, All-American freshman Caleb Wilson.
“The guys still fought. They still fought down the stretch. They finished the season strong. It’s just a shame it went out that way” Johnson said. “I know that the response coming from the fanbase is just because everybody cares. Everybody is invested. Everybody wants to seethe Tar Heels be great.”
