A recall of a BBQ sauce due to an undeclared allergen has been issued the second-highest risk warning by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Savannah Bee Company Inc., based in Georgia, issued a voluntary recall for its Honey BBQ Sauce-Mustard on February 27 because the product contained undeclared soy and wheat. The recall was later issued a Class II risk classification on March 23.
Newsweek reached out to Savannah Bee Company via email for comment outside regular working hours.
Why It Matters
A Class II risk classification, one of three, refers to a situation in which the “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA.
Soybeans and wheat are two of the nine major food allergens as defined under U.S. law. The others are milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, and sesame.
Allergic reactions to egg vary in severity from mild symptoms, such as hives and lip swelling, to life-threatening complications, such as anaphylaxis, that may include fatal respiratory problems.

The product impacted by the recall is the following:
- Honey BBQ Sauce Mustard – 4,611 bottles – UPC code: 8 50033 93758 9 – batch code: B1L1360525 – best before date: 05/16/27
The product was shipped nationwide to consumers, stores and distribution centers between 7/30/2025 and 2/26/2026. It was packaged in clear 16 fl oz bottles with an orange label.
The recall was initiated after the company discovered that its Honey BBQ Sauce “Sweet” was mislabeled as “Mustard.” The mislabeled product failed to state that the allergens wheat and soy were present in the Honey BBQ Sauce Sweet.
As of March 23, the FDA had reported no illnesses in connection with consumption of the product.

The FDA warns in its recall notice: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat or soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the honey BBQ sauce-mustard.”
The Mayo Clinic says on its website: “A child or an adult with wheat allergy is likely to develop symptoms within minutes to hours after eating something containing wheat. Wheat allergy symptoms include: swelling, itching or irritation of the mouth or throat; hives, itchy rash or swelling of the skin; nasal congestion; headache; trouble breathing; cramps, nausea or vomiting; diarrhea; anaphylaxis.”

The recall is listed as ongoing, according to the FDA. Consumers who purchased the recalled product are urged to dispose of it and request a full refund.
