Royals’ Jonathan India Hits $25,000 Grand Slam vs. Twins

Kansas City Royals fans know that the only thing better than a grand slam is a “Sonic Slam.”

For as long as I can remember, the sixth inning of Royals games has been christened as the Sonic Slam inning. If a Royals player hits a grand slam in the sixth inning, someone wins $25,000.

On Wednesday night, Royals second baseman Jonathan India beamed one out of the left-field corner of Kauffman Stadium for a Sonic Slam.

The grand slam put the Royals up 12-1 over the visiting Minnesota Twins in the bottom of the sixth inning. FOX 4 Kansas City’s Harold R. Kuntz confirmed that it also won Kevin Younger, a resident of Pittsburg, Kansas, $25,000.

The Sonic Slam winners are randomly drawn from a pool of sweepstakes entrants.

In June 2024, then-Royals outfielder MJ Melendez belted a grand slam in the sixth inning at Dodgers Stadium, and Mendy King was the lucky Sonic Slam winner — instantly $25,000 richer — per The Kansas City Star at the time.

King told KCTV5 that she spent her unexpected $25,000 to buy a new car because her air conditioning had been broken for years. She also bought a Melendez jersey. The Royals gifted her an autographed Melendez jersey at a game later in the month.

The Royals were 2-2 entering Wednesday’s contest with the Twins. Kansas City won its home opener 3-1 over Minnesota on Monday after going 1-2 against the Atlanta Braves in their opening series of the 2026 MLB season.
