Chelsea Star Sam Kerr Responds to Rumors She’s Leaving for the NWSL
On Wednesday, Australia’s Network 10 posted an exclusive report that Chelsea FC star and Matildas captain Sam Kerr plans to leave the club to join NWSL expansion franchise Denver Summit FC when the Women’s Super League season ends.
Of course, Wednesday was April Fools’ Day, which should be taken into account.
At any rate, Kerr responded to the rumors on her Snapchat, writing, “Don’t believe everything you read in the media, man, they know a decision before me” alongside two laughing-crying emojis and two skull emojis.
Kerr, 32, began her career in the NWSL with the since-folded Western New York Flash (2013-14), the then-Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) from 2015 to 2017, and the then-Chicago Red Stars (now Chicago Stars FC) from 2018 to 2019. Kerr was a two-time NWSL MVP.

Kerr has starred at Chelsea for the past six seasons, winning four WSL titles. She suffered a devastating torn ACL in January 2024. In true Sam Kerr fashion, she scored a goal in her first match back with Chelsea — her first match in 634 days, per The Athletic — last September. It was her 100th goal for Chelsea.
Last month, Kerr led the Australian women’s national team to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup final. The Matildas came up short, losing 1-0 to Japan on March 21.
Kerr rejoined Chelsea and scored a goal in their 4-3 win over Aston Villa on March 29.
Chelsea has won the WSL for six consecutive years, but at 12-4-3, they currently sit nine points behind Manchester City (16-1-2).
Denver Summit FC began NWSL play on March 14. Last weekend, Denver set an NWSL single-game attendance record when 63,004 fans attended the club’s inaugural home game at Empower Field at Mile High.
