Woman Claims Flight Attendant ‘Body Shamed’ Her on Plane—but There’s a Twist


A woman has alleged that a Southwest Airlines flight attendant singled her out for her body size and told her she needed to buy an extra seat.

The clip, posted to TikTok by Natalia Hernandez (@natalia.hernandez082), opens with her questioning the flight attendant as to why she had been singled out.

“How come you’re pointing me out of everybody else when there are women who are bigger than me?” she asks, as the safety announcement plays in the background.

“I’ve never been so humiliated in my life,” Hernandez wrote in the caption. “She picked me out of the line as if I stole something, required my ID, AND SAID I’LL NEED TO BUY ANOTHER SEAT.”

“I can’t believe she body shamed me,” she added.

The footage captures only a portion of the interaction, and the flight attendant’s perspective is not included—prompting viewers to question what may have happened before or after the recording began.

It also does not show whether Hernandez was asked to purchase an additional seat or move, nor does it clarify what prompted the interaction.

That ambiguity has fueled a divided response online, with viewers split over whether the situation reflects unfair treatment or a misunderstood enforcement of airline rules.

One user took the woman’s side, saying, “You’re in your seat. The row is empty. What’s the problem?”

A more skeptical viewer asked, “So why did you keep interrupting when she was trying to explain? I wanna hear her side.”

“Don’t fly Southwest!” a third urged. “They have become the worst airline.”

When one commenter asked Hernandez what the outcome was, she replied, “I spoke to a supervisor, she apologized. She said I do not take up two seats. She took me on the plane and checked herself.

“She gave me a hug and said that this worker will be corrected, and she was going to report her.”

Airline policies around seating and passenger space vary, but they often hinge on safety guidelines.

According to NerdWallet, “The armrest between the seats is often the deciding factor on whether a single seat is comfortable for your flight.

“If the armrests do not lower completely or a body part encroaches into the next seat, another seat might be necessary.”

The outlet adds that “airline policies about who needs an additional seat and the cost of that seat differ.”

Southwest Policies

Southwest Airlines’ own policy states that “customers who encroach upon the neighboring seat(s) must purchase the number of seats needed,” and notes that “the armrest is considered to be the definitive boundary between seats.”

In an email to Newsweek, Southwest confirmed that the company has reached out to Hernandez.

“We ask customers who may need an extra seat to let us know in advance of their day of travel so we can do our best to accommodate their needs,” an airline spokesperson said.

“Our goal is always to provide a comfortable experience for everyone on board; however, with assigned seating, adjacent seats may sometimes already be occupied.”

“In this case, we have reached out directly to the customers involved to better understand their experience and ensure we address any concerns with the appropriate discretion.”
