Adidas Drops Special Collection Paying Homage to 1994 USMNT World Cup Squad
With roughly three months until the United States Men’s National Team plays its first World Cup match on home soil versus Paraguay, Adidas decided to revive a nostalgic, albeit controversial, look from the past.
Released to the public Tuesday morning, the famed apparel company dropped a special ‘denim’ collection harkening back to when the U.S.A. first hosted the World Cup in 1994. The washed-denim kits were highly unique and quite garish even for the ’90s.
If anything, the look was hugely distinct — and it will forever correspond with the sport of soccer starting to gain a foothold in the ecosystem of American sports. In the wake of hosting the World Cup, kids were playing the sport in droves. The 1994 World Cup still remains one of the most financially lucrative editions in the rich history of the tournament.

With practically zero expectations, the U.S. defied the odds and made it to the Round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual champion Brazil.
This apparel release features the iconic denim jersey. However, there’s a bit of an alteration compared to the original one. In 1994, Adidas was the official sponsor of the national team. Nike is currently representing the USMNT — which means that the national team’s crest does not appear on this iteration of the jersey.

Along with the jersey, fans are able to purchase a denim graphic hat, denim shorts, and a very stylish track jacket featuring red and white striped arms and a denim-washed base with “USA” on the back of the piece of clothing.
As a nice way of paying homage to the past, two members of the ’94 team — Alexi Lalas and Cobi Jones — were included in the marketing of the product via a very fun commercial. Lalas, in particular, has become one of the more visible voices pertaining to American soccer after ending his playing career.
