‘Aggrieved’ Red Sox Superstar Reportedly Considered Requesting Trade
Rafael Devers is saying all the right things publicly. But behind the scenes, the Boston Red Sox might have a big problem on their hands.
Early in spring training, Devers said he’d refuse to move off third base to accommodate Alex Bregman, the superior defender. Devers said he wasn’t interested in playing first base or designated hitter.
The superstar slugger recently said he’s willing to play DH and that he told Red Sox decision-makers as much during a private meeting. However, according to MassLive’s Sean McAdam, Devers also considered requesting a trade.
“Devers was angry enough about the situation to consider asking for a trade,” McAdam wrote in a piece published Friday. “It’s possible that, as part of his ‘private conversations’ with Craig Breslow and Co., that he indeed relayed that.”

McAdam added that Devers felt the Red Sox were dishonest with him about offseason rumors concerning Bregman and Nolan Arenado. And Devers still isn’t over it.
“Behind closed doors, (Devers) lets the Red Sox know, in no uncertain terms, that he’s still feeling aggrieved and disrespected,” McAdam wrote. “Meanwhile, to the public, he is the dutiful employee, doing what he’s told to do.”
Devers didn’t make his spring training debut until Saturday due to shoulder injuries, although some have speculated his frustration with the Red Sox might’ve contributed to the prolonged absence. Regardless, he now appears on track to be ready for opening day.
Is this drama really behind Devers and the Red Sox? We’ll just have to wait and see, but the situation bears watching.
