Alaska to Get Snow While Parts of State Have Unusually Warm Temperatures


The National Weather Service (NWS) issued several winter weather alerts for Alaska, with some areas expected to get up to 20 inches of snow while parts of the state are experiencing unusually warm temperatures.

Alaska, known for its extremely cold and snowy climate, has experienced some rare warm weather this month.

Parts of Alaska With Rare Warm Temperatures

January is set to be just outside the top five warmest for Anchorage and outside the top ten warmest for Fairbanks, according to Alaska’s News Source.

Anchorage and Fairbanks Temperature Today

It was 48 degrees Fahrenheit in Anchorage and 42 degrees Fahrenheit in Fairbanks as of around 2:30 p.m. AKST on Friday.

Parts of Alaska Under Winter Weather Alerts

The NWS issued a winter weather alert for the following areas until 3 a.m. Saturday AKST:

  • Western Arctic Coast
  • Northwest Arctic Coast
  • Northern Arctic Coast
  • Western Arctic Plains
  • Howard Pass and the Delong Mountains

There will be snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in those areas.

  • Central Beaufort Sea Coast
  • Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast

There will be blowing snow with winds gusting as high as 55 mph in those areas.

The weather service issued a winter weather alert for the following areas until 6 a.m. Saturday AKST:

  • South Slopes Of The Central Brooks Range
  • Upper Koyukuk Valley
  • Dalton Highway Summits

There will be snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches in those areas.

The NWS issued a winter weather alert for the Southern Denali Borough until 3 a.m. Sunday AKST. There will be snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches in the area.

The weather service issued a winter weather alert for the following areas until 9 a.m. Sunday AKST:

There will be snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches near Paxson, 4 to 8 inches south of Tonsina to around mile marker 40 and 10 to 20 inches from mile marker 40 to Thompson Pass.

There will be snow accumulations of 9 to 18 inches in Susitna Valley north of Talkeetna.

  • Upper Chena River Valley
  • Goldstream Valley and Nenana Hills
  • Chatanika River Valley
  • Two Rivers
  • Fairbanks Metro Area
  • Nenana

There will be snow accumulations of 1 to 5 inches in those areas. The amount of snowfall in each region will depend on its elevation with Fairbanks getting lower amounts of snow.

The NWS issued a winter weather alert for the Lower Kuskokwim Valley until 3 p.m. Sunday AKST. There will be snow accumulations of 8 to inches in the area.

The weather service issued a winter weather alert for the following areas until 3 a.m. Monday AKST:

  • Middle Yukon Valley
  • Lower Yukon and Innoko Valleys
  • North Slopes of the Western Alaska Range
  • Upper Kuskokwim Valley

There will be snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches in those areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said in various winter weather alerts on Friday, “A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. This will make travel very difficult or impossible.”

“Slow down and use caution while traveling,” the weather service said in other Friday winter weather alerts.
