Amy Schumer Hints at Possible Martin Short Romance

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Amy Schumer may have just dropped a major hint about a potential romance between Martin Short and a beloved actress.

While attending the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on Saturday, February 15, Schumer sat next to Only Murders in the Building stars Short and Meryl Streep and shared what she witnessed to People.

“There’s really no one funnier to sit next to than Marty Short,” Schumer noted to the outlet on Monday, February 17. “I think that the tea is, I think Marty might be off the market. That’s what I’m seeing. I don’t know,” she teased. The Trainwreck star then suggested that it could be with, “the greatest actor of our time. I don’t know.”

While Schumer, 43, didn’t directly mention Streep, 75, her suggestion was clear. The comedian’s suspicions come off heels of persistent rumors about the pair’s rumored relationship, though a rep for Short, 74, dismissed romance speculation in January 2024 telling E! News, “They are just very good friends, nothing more.”

However, fans have had plenty of fuel for their imaginations. In August, the two were seen holding hands at an after-party for the premiere of Only Murders in the Building season four. The following month, they continued to spark curiosity at the 2024 Emmys by sitting together.

For those who don’t watch Only Murders, Short and Streep play theater director Oliver Putnam and actress Loretta Durkin, whose on-screen romance has become a fan favorite –– many wondering if their chemistry extends beyond the screen.

Ahead of the season 4 finale, show co-creator John Hoffman shared his thoughts with Decider on Oliver and Loretta’s romance and how the two stars “delighted each other.” He also called their unexpected relationship “one of the most unexpected turns” he’s experienced on the show. “As I got to know Meryl, as I’ve known Marty and as I watched the two of them work together in Season 3, I just — it was unbelievable. We were laughing our heads off.”
