Andrew Cuomo Issues New Warning to Trump in NYC Mayoral Debate
Andrew Cuomo said he is the last person President Donald Trump wants to see as the next mayor of New York City, because the former New York governor is the only candidate who knows how to “beat him.”
“I know how to deal with Donald Trump because I’ve dealt with him before,” Cuomo said during the New York City mayoral primary debate on Wednesday evening.
“We fought on a daily basis through COVID. And I won many of those battles … So he can be beaten, but he has to know that he’s up against an adversary who can actually beat him.”
Why It Matters
Cuomo is leading in the primaries for New York City mayor, marking a dramatic political comeback for the former governor who resigned in 2021 amid the threat of impeachment over sexual misconduct allegations. Cuomo has always denied the accusations and no charges were ever brought against him.
What To Know
Trump on Wednesday loomed large over the mayoral primary debate, as the candidates argued who would be the toughest opponent for the Republican president.

Cuomo said that he had clashed with Trump on many occasions on several different issues, including COVID and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the city.
“I fought him on ICE. This is not the first time he’s bought ICE to New York, he’s done that before. And we fought him and we won,” Cuomo said.
“And I can tell you this, I am the last person on this stage that Mr. Trump wants to see as mayor,” he added.
Zohran Mamdani, positioned second in the race, also portrayed himself as a strong foe for the president, calling himself Trump’s “worst nightmare.”
Cuomo faced a grilling from his fellow candidates, and at times the moderators, including about the report that he had created a toxic work environment, especially for women.
The former governor denounced the report as “political” and “false,” adding that five district attorneys had investigated it and “found absolutely nothing.”
The Rev. Michael Blake also brought up a past accusation of sexual assault against Cuomo, comments to which the former governor declined to respond.
When asked if he had any regrets during his many years in politics, Cuomo said, “That the Democratic Party got to a point that we allowed Mr. Trump to be elected. That we’ve gotten to a point where rhetoric has no connection with reality.
“I regret the state of the Democratic Party … that we elected Trump,” he added.
Cuomo also got heated when faced with questions about nursing home deaths during COVID-19.
He refused to answer one on whether he had edited his administration’s report on the deaths to conceal the true figure, insisting that his administration “did not undercount the deaths.”
Cuomo instead argued that the allegations were “the Trump line, the MAGA line.”
The Justice Department and other federal entities looked into Cuomo’s actions and did not press any criminal charges.
What People Are Saying
Mamdani said during Wednesday’s debate, “I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare, as a progressive Muslim immigrant who actually fights for the things that I believe in and the difference between myself and Andrew Cuomo.”
Cuomo claimed that Trump would cut through Mamdani “like a hot knife through butter” if he were elected, adding, “He would be Trump’s delight.”
City Comptroller Brad Lander said, “I’ll show you that I’m the only one in this race with the progressive values to make this city more affordable, with the public integrity, to sweep away the corruption of Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo, and with a proven management experience, having already delivered over 50,000 affordable homes to actually deliver on my promises, I’ll get 500,000 homes built over the next 10 years.”
What Happens Next
The New York City mayoral primary is scheduled for June 24, with early voting beginning on June 14. The general mayoral election will be held on November 4.
This is a breaking story and will be updated as further information becomes available.
