Atlanta Dream Star Brittney Griner at Risk of WNBA Punishment

Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream face off against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings on Wednesday evening in a road matchup. While they came into the game favored to win against a Wings team that has struggled this season, it was not an easy game.

When all was said and done, the Dream were able to pull out an 88-85 win to move to 16-11 on the season.

Unfortunately, a situation during the game could see Griner at risk of receiving punishment from the WNBA. She was ejected from the game, but more repercussions could be on the way.

Griner was ejected in the second half after having a heated interaction with a referee. After being called for a foul, Griner flew off the handle.

She was hit with a technical foul to start the altercation with the referee, but didn’t stop there. Instead, she actually made contact with the official.

That is something the league has been focused on putting an end to. Griner could very well be facing punishment in the form of a fine or suspension from the WNBA. While it isn’t a sure thing, she’s certainly at risk for it.

Here is a video of the altercation that Griner had with the referee.

It will be interesting to see what the league decides to do. There is a chance that they will let it go and Griner can move on with a simple ejection.

Throughout the course of the game, Griner played in 16 minutes. She scored four points on 2-for-5 shooting and grabbed four rebounds.

Atlanta was led by Naz Hillmon, who came off the bench to score 21 points. Allisha Gray scored 15 points and dished out seven assists, while Brionna Jones scored 14. Te-Hina Paopao scored 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists.

On the other side of the court, Bueckers poured in 21 points and seven assists.

Hopefully for the Dream, Griner will be back in action in their next game. Atlanta will be facing off against the Phoenix Mercury at home on Friday night. Only time will tell, but Griner should find out whether more action will be taken by the WNBA in the very near future.
