Auburn Coaching Search Draws Strong Words From Greg McElroy
The Auburn Tigers are currently in the middle of a major head coaching search. After deciding to move on from Hugh Freeze during the middle of the season, quite a few names have come up as potential candidates.
From names who could most certainly be logical choices to options like Jon Gruden, tons of candidates have been brought forward.
As the end of the regular season draws near, the coaching rumors are heating up. Auburn isn’t going to be involved for the likes of Lane Kiffin, but there are a handful of elite candidates who are more than worthy of taking over for the Tigers.

With that being said, former quarterback and current ESPN analyst Greg McElroy spoke out with a strong message about the Auburn head coaching search.

During an appearance on his “Always College Football” podcast on Tuesday, McElroy made it clear who he thinks is the right man for the job. He is all about Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall taking over for the Tigers.
“When you look at Auburn, it’s always been very intriguing, the appeal of this job, because if you have the right guy, you can win a ton of games. … I think it’s very clear where this coaching search should have started, and I think it’s very clear where this coaching search is likely to end, and that’s with the hiring of Jon Sumrall from Tulane,” McElroy said.
“This is a guy that fits the (Auburn) archetype perfectly. He’s a disciplinarian, he has great organizational control, he’s got deep ties to the region. He’s coached at Tulane, he’s coached at Troy, he’s spent time in the SEC, and has put together a track record of punching above his weight class at both of his previous stops. I (like) how organized he is, I think as a program builder, it makes me a real believer in him being able to get things done and get Auburn going in the right direction.”
Sumrall has done an impressive job of building up the Tulane football program. Since taking over as the head coach of the Green Wave back in 2024, Sumrall has compiled a 41-11 record.

This season, Tulane sits at 9-2 and is currently the No. 24 ranked team in the country. Sumrall has been the biggest part of making the Green Wave a potential contender.
If Auburn does settle on Sumrall, he would be an excellent option to put the program back on track. While it has been awhile since the Tigers have been serious title contenders, Sumrall might be able to lead them back to glory sooner rather than later.
