Baker Mayfield Reveals Why He Stayed With Buccaneers This Offseason

Not many expected the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to reach the postseason last year. Thankfully for their fans, the Bucs didn’t listen to the outside noise.

Not only did Tampa Bay reach the postseason with a record of 9-8, the Buccaneers also won a playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The reigning NFC North champions fell to the Detroit Lions in the divisional playoff round, ending a successful season. Now, entering this year, Tampa Bay is looking to do build on its surprising success.

The team retained quarterback Baker Mayfield this offseason, signing him to a three-year deal worth a reported $115 million. Mayfield earned his new contract on the field by throwing for a career-high 4,044 passing yards.

Mayfield threw 28 touchdown passes as well, while having a completion percentage of 64.3. Mayfield showed himself to be comfortable playing in Tampa Bay and revealed why he decided to re-sign with the organization.

“For us, it was a matter of timing,” Mayfield said, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “In the moment, yes, I wanted to get the deal done. But being on the business side of this thing a couple times and on the bad end of it, you want to make sure you get taken care of. So, for me, yeah, I was a little anxious. But I wasn’t worried.

“I knew that based on 2023, getting a fresh start in Tampa, I knew that I had put enough stuff on tape. I knew that I was a starter, but now I knew that other people viewed it the same way. I wasn’t worried, but I wanted it to be Tampa. I knew the culture and that was a place where I could be myself. Genuinely.”

If 2023 was any indication, 2024 should be even better for Mayfield and the Buccaneers. He got another offseason and training camp to work with the receivers, hopefully leading to more chemistry on the field.

“Honestly, winning is the most important thing for a quarterback,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how you get it done. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. However, you get that done, however you get that turned around from where we were at is the most important part.”

The former No. 1 overall pick finally looked like the version of him while he was at the University of Oklahoma. It took a few years in the NFL for him to find his place but for Mayfield, he isn’t looking back but rather at the feats he has ahead of him.
