Bride Refusing to Cater to SIL’s Dietary Restrictions With Wedding Menu Praised: “Eat Air”
A bride’s refusal to change her wedding menu despite the demands of her newly vegan sister-in-law has been applauded by netizens.
The bride and original poster (OP) shared a dose of wedding drama on r/AITAH via her brother’s girlfriend, Reddit user peraltiag0stan.
In the post, she explained that she had finalized her wedding menu months in advance, with the options being steak, salmon, and a vegetarian dish.
However, when her sister-in-law, “Maggie”, declared the vegetarian option unsuitable because it contained cheese, she requested a fully vegan entrée be added to the menu.
She also suggested changing the wedding cake to a vegan option, but the OP “shut her down before she could explore this idea further”.

“I told her I’d already finalized the menu and signed the contract, so it’s too late to make major changes,” the OP explained in the post, adding that she had offered to include vegan appetizers and sides instead.
“Now my future MIL is involved, saying Maggie feels “excluded” and I should just add one vegan meal because “it’s not that hard to accommodate her”,” she continued.
“But here’s the thing—adding a vegan entrée requires renegotiating the contract and paying extra fees, which I’m not willing to do this close to the wedding.”
In an update, the OP revealed that Maggie had allegedly contacted the caterer pretending to act on her behalf, attempting to add five vegan dishes to the menu at an additional cost of $1,500.
Fortunately, the caterer alerted the OP first, who then confronted Maggie, who insisted she was just “fixing the mistake” and accusing the OP of alienating her.
The OP’s story quickly gained traction, with Redditors condemning Maggie’s behavior and praising the OP for standing her ground.
“It’s not your job”
One remarked, “If she doesn’t accept the meal from the vegan restaurant, she can eat air. That is a more than reasonable compromise.”
“It’s not your job to ensure there are plenty of vegan options for one person,” another noted.
According to Reeka Events, clearly communicating dietary options and requirements during the RSVP process can help couples with the stresses of wedding planning.
However, last-minute changes often involve significant logistical and financial hurdles.
A similar report on family dynamics points out how stressful it can be to handle tricky relatives during big events. Psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula told Newsweek, “The goal is to maintain boundaries without letting their behavior derail your plans.”
