Broncos Star Suspended for Behavior Toward NFL Official During Giants Game

The Denver Broncos pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent memory on Sunday against the New York Giants, overcoming a 19-0 deficit entering the fourth quarter to win 33-32 on a last-second field goal by Will Lutz.

However, the team’s performance came at a cost, as Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw was suspended for one game by the NFL on Sunday for his behavior toward official Brad Allen moments after the game-winning kick went through the uprights.

Greenlaw was seen running toward Allen, visibly angry and appearing to have words for him, prompting the referee to throw a flag immediately — though it had no impact in the moment since the game had already ended.

Still, the incident was logged as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and it didn’t take long for the NFL to announce repercussions for Greenlaw’s actions, revealing that he had “verbally assaulted” Allen.

Head coach Sean Payton and the Broncos will likely have the option to appeal Greenlaw’s suspension, though nothing has been finalized yet.

Payton has not addressed the situation in the media, but he was seen coaching up Greenlaw before his debut with the team, and Greenlaw’s impact on the field was certainly felt.

The Giants game marked Greenlaw’s debut with the Broncos this season, and he recorded six tackles on just 20 snaps, showing that his production on the field was already impactful.

After the game, Greenlaw said, “that’s how I play the game… football is the only place where you can go out there and hit people and not go to jail for it.”
