Browns–Garrett Wilson Trade Rumors Take Wild Twist Involving Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns sit at 2-5 heading into Week 8 of the NFL season and have one of the league’s lowest-scoring offenses, averaging just 16.1 points per game.

Worst yet, this number has dropped to 10.6 points over the last three games with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel under center, including back-to-back games with zero touchdowns.

The team’s inability to put up points and Gabriel’s lack of explosive plays have pushed the staff to consider hunting for more playmakers, not the least of which includes New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

During a radio appearance on 92.3 The Fan on Thursday, Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot was asked: “I would trade Shedeur Sanders if it meant getting Garrett Wilson because I think that’s how good Garrett Wilson is and how up in the air I am with Shedeur Sanders. What about you, Mary Kay? That is a quarterback.”

Cabot responded: “The Browns are continuing to bring Shedeur Sanders along… but they’re really excited about what they’re seeing in Shedeur. So, they’re not going to trade Shedeur away before they know what they have in him.

“It’s probably going to happen at some point this season (Sanders starting), I don’t know when. Dillon (Gabriel) is going to have to find a way to score some points to keep his job. But at some point, Shedeur is going to get a chance to go out there and show off that elite accuracy and what he can do with that offense.”

The Browns named Gabriel the starter on Oct. 1, but the rookie third-rounder hasn’t done much to validate that decision.

Across the last three starts, Gabriel has completed 61 of 107 passes (57%) for 527 yards and two touchdowns; his best game came in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings, in which he completed 19 of 33 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

Sanders, meanwhile, has not played a regular-season snap, despite coming off a dominant college season at Colorado in which he led the Big 12 with a 74% completion rate and won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

With the NFL trade deadline approaching on Nov. 4, multiple outlets have linked the Browns to Jets star wide receiver Wilson over the past couple of weeks.

Wilson just inked a four-year, $130 million extension with the Jets in the offseason, but he hasn’t seen a winning season in New York since he was drafted there 10th overall in 2022.

With the Jets being the only winless team in the NFL at 0-7, and Wilson having already displayed visible frustration with the team, the possibility of the organization trading Wilson has been floated out there.

On the Browns’ side, while Cabot insists the team doesn’t want to trade Sanders before knowing what they have in him, they also haven’t shown any confidence in him being the answer long term.

Simply put, the Jets need a quarterback; the Browns need more weapons (and not more QB drama).
