Browns WR Announces Sudden Retirement From NFL at 24
Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell announced his retirement from the National Football League on Tuesday.
Bell, just 24 years of age, revealed that an off-field injury forced him to medically retire.

“Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football future in jeopardy,” Bell wrote in a statement on social media. “After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb.
“Although it is the last thing I would otherwise want to do, with a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement.”
Bell was drafted by the Browns in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The former Purdue wideout appeared in 16 games his rookie year, reeling in 24 receptions for 214 yards. Then, in 2023, he had 14 receptions for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
In 2024, he appeared in just one game, catching three passes for 27 yards. He then suffered a hip injury and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Bell had a ton of thank you’s in his retirement announcement.
“Football gave me memories I’ll cherish forever and taught me how through focus, selflessness, and determination, the whole can be greater than the collection of individuals,” Bell’s statement continued. “Thanks to God for guiding me every step of the way and for the strength to chase this dream. Thank you to the Browns-the Haslams, Andrew Berry, Chris Cooper, my coaches and the team docs/medical staff for providing me with great care.
“To my family whom I love always, and to my community for always holding me down, appreciation and thanks. To Brandon Parker of Vayner Sports for guiding me on my journey. To (Brad Sohn) for making sure this never happens to anyone else again. And of course to the fans who l will miss forever.”
Brad Sohn, a class action and injury lawyer and NFL player advocate reposted Bell’s announcement with a statement: “One thing is for sure. This will NOT happen again. Bet.”
Bell concluded his statement by expressing pride for his accomplishments at football’s highest level.
“I’m so proud of what l’ve accomplished and intend to apply football’s teachings to my next chapter, and to help make the world a better place,” Bell said.
